Pearls in the Sunshine
Seychelles
has 115 islands and while Mahé and Praslin are
the largest, there are many more developed and undeveloped
pieces of paradise.
The
most frequented are those around the main island of Mahé,
from where it is a short journey to Silhouette, Bird, Denis,
La Digue and Frégate.
La
Digue, the fourth largest Seychelles island, is arguably the
most beautiful in the group. Accessible by boat and helicopter,
it is a place where time seems to have stood still and where
excursions by ox cart are a delightful feature.
Southwest
of Mahé lies the Amarantes Group, containing Desroches,
and farther out are the less frequented Farqhuar and Aldabra
Groups.
Many
of the smaller islands are nature reserves or bird sanctuaries,
often containing a single hotel or a series of small lodges.
Nature is vulnerable in these remote places, so conservation
and preservation are an important element of any visitor package.
Many
islands limit the number of guests in order to minimise the
environmental impact. Guests who do venture to these out-of-the-way
places can thus expect a standard of solitude and remoteness
that is rare in the modern world.
